'I smile because I'm appreciative' | Brian Robinson Jr. talks new era at Commanders camp

The running back talked about all the changes around the franchise, and what his dream season looks like

ASHBURN, Va. — While much of the focus around Commanders training camp surrounds new rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, a new coaching staff and new ownership, one key piece of the Commanders' personnel has not changed: running back Brian Robinson Jr.

The 25-year-old is entering his third season with the team and is seen striding around the Ashburn, Virginia training facility with a smile on his face. He said he is excited to showcase his skills and work with new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

"I know Kliff is gonna do his magic and get me in that spotlight. I have many, many different abilities when given the opportunity, and Kliff is going to give me the ground to do that," Robinson said.

Robinson is nearly two years removed from being shot twice in the leg during a carjacking attempt in D.C. was hospitalized, underwent surgery and recovered so quickly he played football six weeks later, finishing his rookie season with nearly 800 yards rushing in 12 games. Now, he is eager to grow under the new regime. He told WUSA9's Chick Hernandez that he is happy with the changes.

"I appreciate all the changes that have been made not only to help better my career, but other guys around here who may have been frustrated by what was going on last season. I just smile because I'm appreciative. Everything that could possibly happened has just helped me. Helped me be better, helped me get more opportunities. Helped me be more who I am."

Robinson has also taken more of a leadership role on the team. He was seen addressing the team during a huddle at training camp. While he said he was addressing ball security with the team, it was not lost on him what it means to be given the opportunity from new skipper Dan Quinn.

"It is an honor to get opportunities from your head coach to step in front of your team and present anything," Robinson said. "That just means that he looks at you as a stand-up guy and a leader."

Fans who just arrived at training camp are showing support for Robinson in a big way. It's something the player does not take for granted.

"It's a blessing to have all these people supporting me and having my back. I think about them and try to show them love any chance I get," he said.

Looking ahead, he hopes to use the renewed energy from the fans, players and coaches for a breakout season. We asked what a dream season looks like for him.

"More than 1,000 yards, more than 10 touchdowns, and at least 500 [yards] receiving," Robinson said.

As we move closer to regular season kick-off, only time will tell if the dream will come true.
