WASHINGTON — A new era in football begins on Thursday with the kickoff of the first round for the NFL draft. Hopes for the Washington Commanders 2024-25 season begins at 8 p.m. in Detroit with the second overall pick.
The Commanders overall second pick was determined in January after they their 38-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. For the season, the Commanders finished with a 4-13 record, which was the same as the New England Patriots and the Arizona Cardinals. The second pick in the draft was awarded to the Commanders over the other two teams due to the strength of the schedule tiebreakers and the results of the other team's last games.
The last time the Commanders had a second overall pick in the draft was in 2020 when they selected defensive end Chase Young. He signed a four-year rookie contract, and was named Defensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press and Pro Football Writers of America.
Young was traded from the Commanders to the San Francisco 49ers in late October 2023 for a 2024 third-round pick. On March 18, it was announced that the defensive end has signed a one-year contract with New Orleans Saints. The day after it was revealed that he would undergo neck surgery, but he should be ready to start by the regular 2024 season in September.
Other second overall picks over the years have gone to greats such as Julius Peppers who went to the Carolina Panthers, Robert Griffin III who joined the then Washington Redskins, and Randall White who went to the Dallas Cowboys.
In the 2023 NFL draft, C.J. Stroud was the second overall pick and he took his talents to the Houston Texans.
NFL prognosticators are predicting that the Commanders will use their pick to draft a quarterback this season. The team with the first overall pick in the draft this year is the Chicago Bears.
