PENNSYLVANIA, USA — A new study by sports data experts Lineups has ranked PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh as the best NHL arena for fans, scoring an impressive 38.47 out of 40 points.
The comprehensive analysis evaluated all 32 NHL arenas based on four key factors: dedicated parking availability, beer prices, walking distance to public transport and proximity to external restaurants.
The Pittsburgh Penguins' home arena emerged as the clear leader, scoring perfect marks in parking and offering fans a beer at just $7 with convenient one-minute walks to both public transportation and nearby restaurants. Nationwide Arena in Columbus and Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. rounded out the top three, with index scores of 35.65 and 35.39 respectively.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Amerant Bank Arena, home to the Florida Panthers, ranked last with a mere 16.82 out of 40 points—a staggering 56% lower than the top-ranked arena. T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and the Honda Center in Anaheim also performed poorly, ranking second and third worst.
Patrick Monnin, Managing Editor for Lineups, highlighted the study's significance.
"Each factor examined considers fans' comfort, revealing which arenas prioritize fan satisfaction and enhance the overall NHL experience."
He emphasized that affordable pricing and convenient amenities can significantly impact fan loyalty and game attendance.
The study's methodology involved scoring each arena out of 10 for four specific criteria:
- Availability of dedicated parking
- Beer pricing (with lower prices earning higher points)
- Walking distance to public transportation
- Walking distance to external restaurants
The top five arenas showcased remarkable consistency in fan-friendly features:
- PPG Paints Arena (Pittsburgh Penguins) - 38.47 points
- Nationwide Arena (Columbus Blue Jackets) - 35.65 points
- Capital One Arena (Washington Capitals) - 35.39 points
- Ball Arena (Colorado Avalanche) - 34.94 points
- Amalie Arena (Tampa Bay Lightning) - 32.41 points
Beer prices varied across these top venues, ranging from $7 at PPG Paints Arena to $12 at Ball Arena, while all maintained excellent accessibility and parking options.
Monnin noted that arenas scoring highly in these categories can build stronger fan loyalty by demonstrating "attention to fan needs and preferences." He suggested that fans are more likely to develop positive associations with venues that make the experience enjoyable and affordable.
The comprehensive study provides valuable insights for hockey fans, team management and arena operators, highlighting the importance of fan experience beyond just the on-ice action.
