National Go Fishing Day | Learning what it takes to be a fly fisher

It's National Go Fishing Day, and to mark the occasion, FOX43 learned how to fly fish.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. — It's National Go Fishing Day, a day that encourages people to step away from their busy schedules and enjoy the beauty of the water and "go fish!"

Here in Central Pennsylvania, there are plenty of places to go fishing and different ways to do it, too.

In South Middleton Township, Cumberland County, in Yellow Breeches Creek, is where we learned how to fly fish alongside an expert, Eugene Giza, of Four Seasons FlyFishing Guide Service.

This interesting technique uses a "fly rod" which is typically lighter and longer than other types of fishing rods--helping with the accuracy when casting a "fly."

The flies are generally made out of natural materials such as feathers, furs and even hair.

"It is a reconnect to nature," Giza said. "And it's mentally and physically challenging. You do your crossword puzzles, you do your Sudoku--might as well fly fish, it stimulates the brain. And of course it's a big boost to the economy."

Giza shared that people from all over Pennsylvania, the country and even around the world come to fish in the Cumberland Valley.

He told FOX43 the best time to go fishing is in the morning, when water temperatures are cool, because once it hits 68 to 70 degrees, there's less oxygen in the water, which stresses the fish.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission requires all anglers aged 16 and over to have a valid Pennsylvania fishing license.
