Who needs a ski lift? Just try uphilling.

Also called uphill skiing, skinning or alpine touring, uphilling is when you hike up a mountain and then ski or snowboard back down.

LEWISBERRY, Pa. — They’re known as the Pennsylvania Dirtbags--a group of outdoor enthusiasts who can often be found on a bike or on a pair of skis.

When FOX43's Sean Streicher met up with them, they were doing something known as "uphilling."

Also called uphill skiing, skinning or alpine touring, uphilling is when you hike up a mountain and then ski or snowboard back down.

Special skis with a removable skin on the bottom or snowshoes are used for traction.

"It’s been a great scene," said Coach Kevin. "A lot of people get out early in the morning; it’s something nice to do, it adds to the area."

Alpine touring usually happens before a ski mountain opens or after it closes. Those brave enough to try it are often rewarded with breathtaking views and empty trails.

"It’s like going to Applebee's before they open," said Jake Haines with a laugh.

It's hard work, but for those that make the trek, like Melanie Bertotto, it's well worth it.

"It’s a good little morning workout, and then you get to ski down. So it’s a little pain and then a fun little reward after that," said Bertotto.
