HARRISBURG, Pa. — When you search for something on Google, the way it generates the result will now include curative artificial intelligence (AI). Curative AI is predefined responses, text, and content that gives the results in a brief, summarized answer.
This new tool is not only going to enhance the way consumers use the platform but also impact websites and businesses that generate revenue from their platforms.
Charles Palmer, the executive director of the Center for Advanced Entertainment and Learning Technologies at Harrisburg University said this new tool is just one of the many ways AI has been incorporated into people’s everyday life.
“Google was very well positioned because that’s what they do, they store data, and then from that data storage they could then build language models that would be used in this particular process,” said Palmer.
According to an article by NBC Los Angeles, the new tool has proven to be the quickest and easiest way to satisfy a user’s curiosity. When users search for something on Google, an AI-generated overview is displayed with a paragraph summarizing the search. Along with the paragraph, several links show where the information came from that helped it populate its response.
“That makes it easier for us who are just looking, but it might be problematic for retailers,” said Palmer. “If someone was making revenue on click-through…they’re going to see a hit, It’s just it’s changing a business model which we see frequently in technology.”
Palmer said that the platforms that are seeing fewer clicks will lose revenue and can’t do much about it because their work doesn’t belong solely to them. According to Google's Privacy Policy, Google collects data about how you use its apps, browsers, devices, and services. This includes your location history, browsing behavior, Gmail and YouTube activity, Google searches, and online purchases.
“You have to read the terms of service if you create a Google sheet if you created a Google Doc, you gave up your retain ownership, but you’ve also had a licensing to Google to utilize that data that information,” said Palmer.
Google plans to roll out more features using curative and generative AI including Gemini, an app that used to be a personal AI assistant.
