DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. — The Swatara Township Police Department issued a security warning ahead of Apple's iOS 18 rollout on Monday.
Officers are warning iPhone users of privacy and security concerns that come with some of the enhanced capabilities the new operating system will allow, specifically the ability to remotely control a screen while FaceTiming.
"While this feature can be helpful, it also poses security risks if used improperly," the STPD said.
Officers say key concerns include:
- Unauthorized remote access: Be aware that screen-sharing allows others to control your screen during a FaceTime call. Sharing your screen with untrusted contacts could lead to misuse or exploitation.
- Accidental exposure of private information: Screen-sharing may expose sensitive data like passwords, banking information and personal messages. Be extremely cautious when using this feature.
- Scams: No legitimate bank, billing department or company will ask to FaceTime and control your screen to help you pay bills or obtain money. If you receive such a request, it is almost certainly a scam.
Here's what you can do to minimize your risk:
- Only share your screen with trusted individuals.
- Be vigilant when giving permissions during screen-sharing.
- Familiarize yourself with iOS 18’s privacy settings to manage these features effectively.
"Always remember no reputable company will request access to your screen for financial transactions," the STPD reiterated. "If you encounter such requests, report them immediately."
