Section of I-83 SB temporarily closed in Dauphin County following fatal crash

I-83 was closed between Exit 47: US 322 East (Derry Street) and Exit 45: Paxton Street/Bass Pro Drive.

DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. — Update, 5:30 p.m.: According to Fritzi Schreffler with PennDOT, all affected lanes have been reopened and traffic is flowing smoothly.

The victim of the fatal crash has been identified as Sean Laudenslager, 41, from Dalmatia, according to Dauphin County's Press Secretary Jennifer Fitch. His manner of death has been ruled accidental and the cause is listed as multiple traumatic injuries.

Update, 10:29 a.m.: A third crash has caused a further lane restriction on Interstate 83 southbound, a PennDOT spokesperson shared.

PennDOT says this crash was fatal and involved a passenger car crashing into the back of a tractor-trailer.

It occurred in the backlog of traffic near mile marker 50, or Exit 50: US 22 West - Progress around 9:20 a.m.

PennDOT says the left two lanes of I-83 southbound are still closed.

Previously: Multiple crashes have closed all lanes of a section of Interstate 83 southbound in Dauphin County this morning, a PennDOT spokesperson announced.

I-83 is closed between Exit 47: US 322 East (Derry Street) and Exit 45: Paxton Street/Bass Pro Drive, according to 511PA.com. PennDOT says this closure is due to a multi-vehicle crash that occurred shortly before 7 a.m. when a tractor-trailer and several other vehicles hit a disabled car in the left lane.

No one was injured in the crash, but cooking oil from the tractor trailer's cargo is leaking, PennDOT said. The leak has extended down to the US 283 split, with some oil also going down storm drains.

I-83 is expected to be closed for hours to clean up the wreck and spill, according to PennDOT.

A second crash involving two vehicles occurred at the backlog near mile marker 48.7. PennDOT says injuries were reported but do not appear to be major.
