HARRISBURG, Pa. — After years of planning, Second Street in Harrisburg will officially become a two-way street starting at noon on Oct. 13., officials say.
When the clock strikes noon, Second Street traffic will include drivers headed southbound from Division to Forster Streets.
There will be one lane of travel in each direction, with a turning lane in the middle, Harrisburg officials say.
Traffic lights at Verbeke, Reily and Kelker Streets were decommissioned in favor of roundabouts at those intersections.
A traffic light will remain at Maclay Street in front of the Governor's Mansion.
Second Street has been a one way street since 1956.
Although the idea to transform it back to two-directional traffic was first discussed in 1970, it was not until 2017 when the City Council, led by then-council President Mayor Wanda R.D. Williams, approved funding for a PennDOT traffic study and engineering planning that the project became a reality, officials said.
Construction crews will finish up the bulk of the work in the coming days, weeks ahead of schedule.
The finishing touches still needed include sealing pavement on side streets, sidewalk caulking, drawing lines on the road and adding signage.
Officials are asking motorists to be patient and vigilant of their surroundings while traveling on Second Street in the coming weeks as drivers adjust to the change.
