FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. — One person is dead and another was flown to a trauma center after an overnight crash in Franklin County.
The incident occurred around 11:57 p.m. on March 21 on Interstate 81 northbound, according to Franklin County 911 Dispatch.
The crash occurred when the tractor-trailer rear-ended a car driving in the right lane of I-81, according to Pennsylvania State Police. After striking the car, the tractor-trailer crossed both northbound lanes and hit the metal guide wire in the center grass median. When the car stopped, it was facing south in the northbound lanes of I-81, troopers said.
The passenger of the car was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver was flown to a trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries, PSP said. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
The deadly crash closed I-81 northbound between Exit 10: PA 914 Marion and Exit 14: PA 316 - Wayne Avenue for several hours. Dispatch says the highway reopened around 6:30 a.m. on March 22.
Dispatch confirmed that the tractor-trailer did not spill anything on the road, but crews were still on the scene to clear the crash.
The Marion Fire Company is investigating.
