BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. — Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal multi-vehicle crash near the York County line.
According to a Facebook post by the Baltimore County Fire Department, the crash occurred along I-83 North between mile markers 33-36.
The driver of a pickup truck and the driver of a mobile crane, whose identities are pending next-of-kin notifications, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Four additional people were transported by ambulance to WellSpan York Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Shortly after 2 p.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police Golden Ring Barrack responded to the area of northbound I-83 in the area of York Road for a reported multi-vehicle crash.
According to a preliminary investigation, a pickup truck hauling a trailer was traveling southbound on I-83 when- for unknown reasons- lost control, crossed over into the northbound lanes and struck a mobile crane- causing both vehicles to burst into flames.
The initial crash caused three additional vehicle crashes, according to troopers.
Major delays are expected for travelers. The Maryland State Highway Administration issued an alert that all lanes are currently closed. The crash is under investigation.
