LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) started removing the old Centerville Road bridge spanning Route 30 in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County early this week.
The demolition is part of the $36.3 million Centerville Road Interchange Improvement project to allow more traffic flow through the area.
The project includes work on Centerville Road from Cornerstone Drive to Marietta Avenue (Route 23), and Marietta Avenue from Centerville Road to Stony Battery Road. The project is primarily located in East Hempfield Township, though the section from Cornerstone Drive to Columbia Avenue is in Manor Township.
Drivers should expect nighttime lane restrictions, stoppages, delays and lane closures from Dec. 11 to Dec. 14 and Dec. 18 to Dec. 21. The work being done consists of:
- Structure replacement
- Superpave overlay
- Base replacement
- Roadway widening
- Milling
- Guide rail improvements
- Drainage improvements
- Pavement markings
- ADA improvements
- Traffic signal improvements
“So as they remove sections of that bridge and lift it off of the supports, we can't have live traffic under the bridge, so we’re going to have some brief stoppages of traffic from Route 30 for 15 minutes at a time so they can remove sections of the bridge,” said Dave Thompson, community relations coordinator, PennDOT District 6.
Fines and violations will be increased in the areas where construction will be done. Thompson says drivers should avoid all distractions that could put the driver and construction workers' lives at risk.
The project started in 2022 and is expected to be completed in July of 2025.
