Section of Route 283 in Lancaster County reopens after deadly crash

An early morning crash left one person dead and closed a major commuter section of a Lancaster County highway for hours Wednesday morning.

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — Update, 9 p.m.: The Lancaster County Coroner's Office has confirmed the identity of the victim from Wednesday morning's crash.

Matthew Caraballa, 29 of East Petersburg, was pronounced dead at 2:41 a.m., and his cause of death was listed as multiple traumatic injuries.

Route 283 westbound at Route 30 was closed, and York Road to Fruitville Pike was also closed, according to Lancaster County 911 Dispatch. The highways reopened at 6:53 a.m., police said. There were residual traffic delays, according to 511PA.com.

The crash occurred at 1:24 a.m. on Feb. 21, and Dispatch reports that only one car, a 1996 Ford Explorer, was involved. Police say initial investigation suggests that the vehicle had been driving from Fruitville Pike to Route 283 West when it drove off the roadway and returned to the lane before rolling and sliding.

The driver, a 29-year-old man, was taken to the hospital, where he later died, according to the Manheim Township Police Department. His identity is not being released at this time.

The Manheim Township Police Department is investigating the crash. Officers at the scene reconstructed the crash.
