YORK, Pa. — This week, AAA estimates nearly 72 million people will travel by car over Thanksgiving.
That’s an additional 1.3 million travelers on the road compared to last year.
With a projected 1.3 million additional cars on the road this Thanksgiving holiday, gas stations will be buzzing with business and luckily for drivers the price at the pump is falling.
According to AAA, gas prices are lower this Thanksgiving season compared to 2023. The state average last Thanksgiving day was $3.56. This year's prices are projected to be around $3.24 a gallon across the state.
Closer to home, prices in the Harrisburg area are around $3.21 per gallon on average. In Lancaster, you're paying the least, around 3$.19 per gallon. And in York, you're paying $3.37 per gallon. AAA predicts 9.7 million people will travel in the mid-Atlantic region, which includes New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.
That's up 2% from 2023.
AAA says the worst times to travel are Monday, Nov. 25 between 1 and 5 p.m., Nov. 26 between 1 and 7 p.m., and Nov. 27 between 1 and 5 p.m. on all three days, it's best to leave before 11 a.m. Sheetz also says it will cut drivers' costs before the Thanksgiving holiday.
The gas station announced last week that its Unleaded 88 gas is down by 40 cents a gallon. This promotion will last through the end of November and is available at all 505 locations.
The EPA has approved that type of gas for use in vehicles made in 2001 and after.
