PENNSYLVANIA, USA — June is National Camping Month, and some sites in south-central Pennsylvania could be the perfect spot for your next wilderness getaway.
Experts say the region has some of the best camping spots but campers need to act fast if they hope to secure a spot for this summer.
"Pennsylvania offers some great camping. You really get a variety, [you] have a lot of trails, woods and hills. Just the landscape is phenomenal here," said Megan Salvatore, co-owner of River Rock Recreation Campsite. "But, those desirable dates are the first things to go in all campgrounds, I would definitely sit down with your family. Maybe this year thinking about more towards the end of the summer."
However, the early planning will be worth the opportunity to disconnect and experience the beautiful landscapes that south-central Pennsylvania has to offer.
"There is always going to be the desire to disconnect and maybe [do some] streaming along the river for a little bit not necessarily on your phone," said Salvatore.
Once you get your date and site locked up, experts say there are a few things campers should check off their to-do list including understanding your campsite guidelines, double checking your necessities (i.e. food, water, medication, etc.).
They emphasize it really all comes down to preparation.
"Have a look at those digital resources before you leave, I think will give you a good feel for that specific site. You're also pushing yourself in a way you don't even realize and you definitely don't do on a daily. You need to make sure you're drinking enough water or taking your medications on time," said Salvatore. "All that prep and planning makes for a carefree camping trip."
Before you get comfortable after arriving at your campsite, make sure to check your surroundings.
"Have a look at your site, 'Are there any dangerous things at your site?'" said Salvatore. "Is there something that you need to report to the campground owner that maybe they don't know about?"
Finally, during your outdoor stay, experts add to expect the unexpected that nature brings for a lifetime of memories.
"Sometimes things will go wrong. Whether you do all the planning and all the preparation. Some of the best memories that you can make camping come from unexpected occurrences like that some things that would ruin somebody's camping trip actually make it the most memorable one of your life," said Salvatore. "Just embrace the chaos, embrace not knowing every little thing. I mean, isn't that why you're out camping?”
