PENNSYLVANIA, USA — The unofficial start of summer is here with the Memorial Day holiday weekend upon us. As a record number of travelers hit the road this weekend, travel experts are emphasizing planning and safety.

According to AAA Central Penn, about 1.5 million additional drivers are expected to be on the roadways than last year.

"Travel did pick up a lot quicker this year than usual," said Doni Lee Spiegel, public relations manager at AAA Central Penn. "Spring was very busy but now here we are in the heat of it literally."

They say timing and route planning right up to when you reach your destination is essential.

"I would certainly avoid traveling in the afternoon hours when we are expecting peak traffic conditions," said Spiegel. "For local residents, I would recommend staying off the interstates because of all the through traffic coming and going. It might be the quickest way to go mileage-wise wise but time-wise, if you avoid that heavy congestion, it could save you some time routing around it."

They say safety should also be top of mind. You can never be too prepared to protect those you are driving and share the road with.

"I think sometimes we take driving for granted, it's just a means to get from point A to point B but it's important that we keep all the other drivers in mind and all the other families in mind," said Spiegel.

Preparation, safety and planning measures that should be exercised both to and from your destination.

"Plan extra time into your trip for sure. It's going to take a little bit longer, there's a lot more people on the roadways," said Speigel. "The more time you have to get to your destination the more calm and relaxed you will feel on your trip home."

With one last tip: The extra time you take to prepare will make a world of a difference once you get to your destination.

"The most important thing about traveling is just making memories. You know seeing your friends and family people you love the most and you have fun with so enjoy your travel," said Spiegel. "The more you can plan the more relaxed and the more fun you'll have."
