LEMOYNE, Pa. — Saturday could be the first plowable snow of the season for central Pennsylvania.
On Friday, officials with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) said winter crews across the counties were already preparing.
Aside from Lancaster County, the vast majority of permanent positions are filled. Below is a look at openings in central Pennsylvania's five largest counties as of Jan. 4.
PennDOT crews on Friday will lay down salt and brine to keep ice and snow from bonding on the roads. On Saturday, they will patrol the roads for any snow removal.
PennDOT officials said they usually see an increase in crashes during the first snow. They want to remind drivers to allow plenty of time for their weekend commutes and avoid tailgating.
Fritzi Schreffler, a spokesperson for PennDOT, said the first snow of the season can also be a learning experience for young drivers.
“If you have teenagers that have their permit or if they're relatively new drivers, take them out," said Schreffler. "You don’t want them to have their first driving experience in the snow without you in the car.”
Schreffler also said to prepare your vehicle for the snow. This includes making sure a vehicle has a full tank of gas, full tread on tires and an emergency kit if you get stuck on the road.
