HARRISBURG, Pa. — Update, 3 p.m.: According to a PennDOT spokesperson, all speed restrictions were lifted as of 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Previously: PennDOT temporarily reduced the speed limits across several major roadways across central Pennsylvania.
Due to weather conditions, the speed limit was temporarily reduced along major highways across Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York Counties.
PennDOT urged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, but those who head out saw speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways:
- Interstates 81 and 83;
- Routes 15, 22, 30, 222, 322, and 581
On roads with speed restrictions, commercial vehicles not affected by restrictions on these or other roadways must move to the right lane.
PennDOT officials state that although crews have been treating roadways, the primary goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of snow and ice.
For those who must travel, PennDOT urged all drivers to check 511PA, which is free and provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and more.
The department also asked motorists to allow plenty of space when driving near plow trucks. Also, for their safety and the safety of plow operators, motorists should never attempt to pass a truck while it is plowing or spreading winter materials.
PennDOT reminded drivers to pack an emergency kit for their cars. A basic kit should include non-perishable food, water, a blanket, a small shovel and warm clothes. When preparing an emergency kit, motorists should account for the special needs of passengers such as baby food, pet supplies or medications and pack accordingly.
