Snow geese migration is an extraordinary sight to see in Lancaster County | Travel Smart

Hundreds of thousands of snow geese flock to Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area as part of their spring migration.

MIDDLE CREEK, Pa. — Hundreds of thousands of birds have been flocking to Lancaster County in a wildlife phenomenon that is an extraordinary sight to see. Snow geese have been passing through the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area as part of their annual spring migration.

"It’s one of the most extraordinary wildlife scenes in the entire United States," said Emma Hamaker, an educator at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area.

It’s an annual event that draws out bird enthusiasts from across central Pennsylvania and beyond.

"It’s really amazing, beautiful is the best way to describe it," said Hamaker. "To see that beautiful flock of white and the tip of their wing tips flying and the noises they make, it’s absolutely a sight to see."

It’s a wildlife phenomenon that catches the attention of even those outside the birding community.

"It just brings me so much joy that other people are finding so much enjoyment and exciting activity out of what’s being seen," said Hamaker.

This year, the snow geese began appearing in early February. Experts expect them to stick around until the beginning of March.

"I recommend coming out as soon as you can just because wildlife is unpredictable and as much as we would like to give them a call and know their day-to-day schedule, we can’t do that," said Hamaker. "So as soon as you get out here and see the extraordinary sight that is the snow geese, the better."

On top of the snow geese, from an educational experience at Middle Creek’s Visitor Center to hiking trails, hunting opportunities and other events, there’s something for everyone.

"Middle Creek is a great place for anybody no matter what your interests are," said Hamaker. "If you like the outdoors this is the place for you."
