YORK, Pa. — A new state-of-the-art museum in York County that highlights the area’s historical significance and achievements is opening this summer.
Nearly a decade in the making, the York County History Center is set to open its doors to the public on August 2 and will tell the story of York County in the past, present and future.
"This is a culmination of so many years of work, we are just elated," said Joan Mummert, the president and CEO of the York County History Center. "It's so transformational in how history is conveyed. We hope people are delighted, surprised and amazed."
"We [wanted] to accurately reflect the history of York County from the past, including all the different cultures that lived here or came here and worked here," said Dennis Baughman, the chairman of the York County History Center Board of Directors. "[We also] understood that, in the future, there's going to be history made as well."
The museum features a variety of interactive exhibits that showcase the wide range of stories that made York County what it is today. From your casual browsers to your die-hard history buffs it's a place that is intended for all types of museum-goers who are interested in learning more about the area.
"People consume museums in different ways. And so we've designed for all types of learners and folks who want to experience the museum," said Mummert. "We wanted people to find the things that interest them the most, whether it be women's history or manufacturing, and that we don't direct you in any certain way. You are the consumer you drive your experience."
The new museum is located on North Pershing Avenue moving into what used to be the Met-Ed steam plant. The building was first purchased in 2015 as part of the 31-million-dollar project.
Preserving and integrating itself into the historical building reflects the crossroads between the past, present and future while also emphasizing the pride that the York County community has for its significant place in American history.
"What amazed me when we first walked in, as they were building the exhibits was the magnitude, the color, the stories, and it looked like a museum that you would find in any city," said Mummert. "We're very proud of that. This [museum] is so unique amongst our peers in the south-central Pennsylvania area. We hope people come visit.
