How to best protect your windows and wallet this winter | Home Smart

Prevent moisture buildup and damage from large temperature swings with these helpful winter tips.

YORK, Pa. — You can do everything right and still miss out on properly heating your home if your windows and doors aren't maintained.

While you're never going to have a window that doesn't allow for some air to make it through, experts at West Shore Home say you can let a lot of money flow from your pocket and out the window.

"Once the air comes through, that means the moisture can come with it, which means it can freeze or leave residue and start to mold or mildew," explained Justin Darosh, the general manager of West Shore Home.

Checking caulking and weather stripping for cracks around windows and doors and making sure to keep wooden frames painted or treated are the most common ways to prevent moisture buildup and damage from large temperature swings.
