YORK, Pa. — South-central Pennsylvania is in the middle of a heat wave and people are looking for ways to beat the heat. People at one York County pool are staying cool as the high temperatures settle in, no matter what role they play.
“When it’s hot like this there’s always a chance of heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and probably the most important thing you can do is drink water,” said Kenton Jacobs, the co-owner of Lincolnway Swimming Pool and Sports Club in York County.
He added that heat is making kids eager to get in the water and there are fewer sunbathers by the day.
Jacobs says that when there’s a long stretch of hot temperatures like these, people come to the pool less.
“Tou sit inside in the air conditioning. Your house is stale. You’re sedimentary. You know, that’s not a lifestyle I would advocate for,” Jacobs said.
Elizabeth Bell, a senior guard at Lincolnway, spends hours under an umbrella, in hot temperatures, to keep people safe. She said she gets jealous of people who are in the water.
“I definitely get some envy, but those umbrellas really are our best friends,” Bell said. “I mean, we don’t get up there and not immediately put those umbrellas up.”
She says that staying hydrated and using sunscreen is important in these heat conditions.
Laura Shovlin, a member at the Lincolnway Swimming Pool, says the club is not only great for staying cool in hot weather but for building a community as well.
“We come here almost every day to stay cool, swim, there’s lots for kids to do,” Shovlin said. “It’s good exercise for them to be out here and making new friends.”
Lincolnway is like their home away from home, according to Shovlin, with the opportunity to stay cool with a sweet treat, like ice cream, or a big splash.
