Extreme heat affects after-school activities in south-central Pa.

Heat indexes were above 100 degrees in much of the area.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Extreme heat in south-central Pa. on Wednesday pushed heat indexes above 100 degrees.

Many students taking part in after-school activities, however, were undeterred.

Student-athletes at York Suburban High School braved the heat thanks to the preparation of their coaches.

"We started telling them last night, you go with a water bottle. Have a water bottle with you all the time," said Denise Kreider, the head field hockey coach at York Suburban. "We have extra water today, Gatorade on the field, and we also have cool packs that they can put around their neck, so it helps to cool them down. And we’ll take extra breaks."

Other activities like the school’s marching band have had to brave the extreme conditions throughout the summer.

"This year has been particularly difficult for rehearsals and heat," said YSHS marching band director Korbin Shearer. "We had a band camp about three weeks ago, and there were three or four days of that band camp where we had to spend a good chunk of the day inside just due to the weather. So it's been an interesting year."

Other school districts took even more precautions when it came to the heat. Districts like Central Dauphin gave students a half-day and after-school outdoor activities were canceled in districts like Lampeter-Strasburg in Lancaster County.

At York Suburban, however, students braved through thanks to their preparation and mentality.

"I just try not to let it affect me," said field hockey player Grace Bramble. "It's the weather. It won't really affect my practice if I don't think about it too much."
