High school students in Pennsylvania helping Helene victims

As the death toll rises down south, a class at North Schuylkill High School has made it a mission to help the victims.

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. — Donation boxes line the hallway inside North Schuylkill Junior/Senior High School near Ashland. The items will be donated to Hurricane Helene victims

This comes just one day after these intro to marketing students put a plan in motion.

"When we heard that the death toll was almost 200 people, and the people that were missing during the hurricane was even more than that, we realized that we had to do something to help," said Brynn Wartman.

And that's exactly what they did.

"So, this is very new. They had the idea, and they ran with it. We've already managed to put some things in motion, and get some partners and collaboration, and get some donations. We have a lot of momentum so far," said Melanie Fowler, Marketing Teacher at North Schuylkill Junior/Senior High School.

Boscov's near Pottsville is one of the businesses partnering with the students in their hurricane relief efforts.

"On October 5, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., we will be accepting donations at the Pottsville Boscov at the front of the store where you can either buy stuff in the store or you can bring stuff from home," explained Taylor Ferrari, Marketing Teacher at North Schuylkill Junior/Senior High School.

Donations can also be brought to the North Schuylkill High School lobby during the week. The high school's Facebook page has a list of supplies needed.

"Mothers need bottles. They need the formula and the stores that they cannot access, so we're really asking people in the community to come together and bring everything forth for those families," said Ferrari.

They hope to fill a tractor-trailer with all of the non-perishable foods, supplies, and clothes in the next two weeks.

Students at North Schuylkill High School hope other schools in the county join the effort.
