WASHINGTON — Before we dive headfirst into the hustle and bustle of a new work week, let's take a moment to appreciate the beauty of Sunday night's 84% Waning Gibbous moon, as seen rising behind the iconic Statue of Freedom atop the U.S. Capitol.
One of our amazing Weather Watchers captured this breathtaking celestial moment, and we can't help but swoon over the stunning sight.
The second and third photos offer an even closer look at the moon, giving us all the details we usually miss from the ground—craters, shadows, and that brilliant glow.
For all you moon lovers out there, here's a fun fact: the Waning Gibbous phase is when the moon is more than half illuminated but decreasing in size. Sunday night’s moon was at 84%, just shy of its next phase, the Third Quarter. Even though it wasn’t a full moon, the scene was just as mesmerizing.
