NWS confirms tornado in York County from Wednesday storms

The tornado, with winds of 85 mph, started in North Hopewell Township and travelled to Winterstown Borough. No injuries were reported.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — The National Weather Service (NWS) travelled to York County Friday afternoon to assess damage leftover from severe storms that moved through Wednesday night.

Officials determined that an EF-0 tornado with winds of 85 mph briefly touched down in York County with a path of 0.6 miles. The tornado touched down in North Hopewell Township and travelled northeast before dissipating in Winterstown Borough. The width of the path was about 125 yards.

Damage from the tornado included 1-2 dozen snapped or uprooted trees, some of which were lofted 25-45 yards according to NWS. Two homes also sustained minimal damage to siding and a swing set was damaged. 

The storms Wednesday evening were caused as the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred moved up the East Coast. 

The NWS State College office also confirmed an EF-0 tornado touched down in Snyder County the same night.
