PennDOT still hurting for plow drivers, mechanics

The State Department of Transportation is looking to hire dozens of full-time and part-time workers.

LEMOYNE, Pa. — Winter is coming, but will there be enough plow drivers to handle any potential snow?

The state is still short dozens of workers.

“Every business across the country is struggling to get employees so we’re no different," said Fritzi Schreffler, spokesperson for PennDOT District 8.

PennDOT is short dozens of workers, both drivers and mechanics which are needed to keep the trucks in tip-top shape.

“We look at Lancaster County and the last check I had, we were still looking for almost 40 full-time employees, not to mention the temporaries we take on for the winter," said Schreffler.

If the positions aren’t filled, Schreffler says drivers will be pulled from other parts of the region to make sure the major highways are cleared.

“All the roads will get treated, some of those that have a lower traffic volume on them it may take longer to get to them," she said.

PennDOT representatives say if you don’t want a full-time job, there is always the option to be an on-call worker.

“[That] means we would just call you out when there is winter weather," said Schreffler.

Plow drivers start at $22 an hour while mechanics start at $27 an hour. You can apply through the PennDOT website.
