PennDOT begins winter preparations, highlights new equipment to enhance traveler safety

Transportation leaders had several vehicles from each agency at the event, equipped with new, green lights.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — State transportation leaders highlighted new safety measures in place as they prepare for the winter season.

PennDOT and Pa. Turnpike leaders were in Harrisburg Wednesday, talking about a new measure signed into law with the recent budget, providing $75 million in additional funds for new equipment.

They say the money will help ensure crews have what they need to clear roads quickly and efficiently.

"I'm proud of that effort, PennDOT will continue that," said Secretary Mike Carroll. "We have a yard full of equipment out there and it highlights the fact that PennDOT is ready, our operators are ready."

Transportation leaders also had several vehicles from each agency on site, equipped with new, green lights.

The green lights are in addition to the typical yellow lights the trucks have, in accordance with a new law signed in July to make construction and maintenance vehicles more visible.
