PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Meteorological winter spans December, January and February -- the climatologically coldest part of the year.

But, snowfall can occur in Central Pa. before then.

When might it first snow in 2023?

The first chance for a few lake effect flurries cannot be ruled out during the morning of Nov. 1 for some spots, mostly your more favorable spots to the north and west of Harrisburg. A quick hit of chilly air begins the month, as we can expect well below-average highs across the area.

When does it typically first snow in Central Pa.?

For areas northwest of Harrisburg, the average first snowfall typically occurs in late November. For Harrisburg, the average first snowfall, which is snow that accumulates at least a tenth of an inch, typically occurs around the start of December.

How much does it typically snow in Central Pa.?

Harrisburg averages 29.9 inches of snow every year based on data between 1991 and 2020. This average has decreased from the long term average, which is 33.2 inches since 1889. Last year, snowfall accumulated well short of the average with only 5.9 inches of snow measured at the Capitol.

Potential good news for snow lovers this year is we are seeing a change in one of our big climate patterns as the Pacific Ocean transitions from La Niña to El Niño. This could mean a greater chance for snow here in Pennsylvania.
