With storms in the forecast, first responders warn of the danger of downed wires

Downed wires can burn grass and even melt through cement curbing, officials with Union Fire Company No. 1 warned.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — After storms slammed parts of central Pennsylvania- and with more in the forecast- first responders are reminding the public how dangerous downed wires can be. 

According to Union Fire Company No. 1 in Manchester, York County, when strong winds or trees push over utility poles, they often remain energized and are incredibly dangerous to be around. 

"Never attempt to come in contact with, move, or cut downed wires," the volunteer fire company wrote in a Facebook post. 

The wires can burn grass and even melt through cement curbing.

First responders are reminding the public to call 911 and report any downed wires to a local power company.
