FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pennsylvania — The Franklin County Area Agency on Aging will be extending the hours of some of its senior activity centers on Wednesday, Aug. 28, in an effort to protect local senior citizens from the extreme heat.

Centers in Chambersburg, Greencastle and Tuscarora will be open until 7 p.m. on Wednesday for residents aged 60 and older.

Senior centers in Mont Alto, Path Valley, St. Thomas, Upper Strasburg and Waynesboro will continue to operate under their normal hours, but seniors are still welcome to visit these locations to avoid the high temperatures.

"As temperatures climb this week, older residents seeking a place to cool off are welcome at any of Franklin County's eight senior centers," the Franklin County Area Agency on Aging wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s this Wednesday, and additional humidity will make it feel even hotter. FOX43 has issued a Weather Impact Alert for Wednesday between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. A heat advisory will also be in place throughout the area at the same time.

"Our entire area is outlined under a Slight risk for severe weather or a level 2 out of 5 on the severe weather scale," FOX43 meteorologist Danielle Miller wrote regarding Wednesday's forecast. "The main time frame of storm activity is between 4 and 10 p.m. We'll primarily watch for the threat of damaging winds, though some small hail is also possible."

Temperatures are eventually expected to decline after Wednesday, with highs peaking in the mid-80s.
