York County preparing for remnants of Tropical Storm Debby

The remnants of Tropical Storm Debby are set to hit south-central Pennsylvania on Thursday and Friday. Flooding and power outages could be a problem.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Wednesday was rainy but the calm before the storm.

After several inches of rain were dumped on York County Tuesday night, the area is now bracing for even more, as the remnants of Debby make their way up the east coast.

“The ground is still busy absorbing that and we’re gonna put more water on top of that so that allows for the possibility of flooding," said Ted Czech, public information officer for York County Office of Emergency Management the county's 911 center.

Czech spent Wednesday meeting with local emergency coordinators, fire rescue crews and the Red Cross, making sure everyone was ready for the potential impacts.

“We want to let people know this is what’s going on, there’s moves being made, we’re thinking of worst possible scenarios and things like that," he said.

At J&W Hardware in Newberry Township, shelves are stocked with generators and sump pumps.

“We keep a whole bunch on hand 'cause when one person needs them, everybody needs them," said the store's owner, Joe Helsel.

Homeowners are also reminded to keep generators outside when in use.

“Make sure you’re using a cord, don’t try to wire it up to your house, use a properly made cord and stuff like that," Helsel explained. "A lot of times with generators, gas is an issue, making sure you have fresh gas too.”

It's also recommended that people fuel up their vehicles before the storm hits and make sure cell phones and other devices are charged.
