Wildfires spread across Franklin County prompting state officials to advise against open burning

Several fires have been reported Saturday and some have been due to open burning, according to the Franklin Fire Company.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. — Several fires have been burning across Franklin County Saturday according to the Franklin Fire Company.

The company has said the cause of some of the fires have been because of open burning.

Bruce Trego, Pennsylvania state fire commissioner says people should hold off on any burning as weather conditions at this moment can cause fires to spread fairly quickly.

"The wind is blowing and it's breezy, and we have a lot of chances to have those spread to an exposed structure or even get larger or get into a large fire that we really don't need right now," said Trego.

Trego has also noted the Office of the State Fire Commissioner and the National Fire Protection Association are reminding folks to change the batteries of the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes.

The state fire commissioner says it is important to do this every month as neglect can cause unfortunate outcomes.

"The smoke alarm was in place but it didn't work because they had not checked it," Trego said, "there are documented cases of those folks that didn't make it out because they didn't get the warning of 'hey there's a fire it's time to get out."
