At around midnight tonight, southbound traffic on I-81 will be funneled into a single lane on the approach to the I-81 Exit 67 (Cameron Street / Lewistown) interchange. Southbound traffic will then be stopped for up to 30 minutes as one of the new bridge beams is set on the piers flanking southbound I-81. Motorists will have the option to detour around the closure by way of traveling on westbound Route 22/322 to Route 39 (Linglestown Road) and then back on eastbound Route 22/322 to southbound I-81.
There are six bridge beams for the span that crosses over southbound I-81. Three were set on Saturday night. The remaining three will be set tonight. If the construction crews do not set all three remaining beams tonight, what remains will be completed on Tuesday night – weather permitting. Motorists are asked to be alert to this operation and to slow down when approaching the construction work zone.
This work is part of the restoration of the I-81 Exit 67 interchange that was severely damaged by a huge tanker truck fire on May 9, forcing the closure of the ramp from northbound I-81 to westbound Route 22/322 and the demolition of the eastbound Route 22 bridge over I-81. PennDOT hired G.A. & F.C. Wagman, Inc. of York, Pennsylvania, to rebuild the eastbound Route 22 bridge at a cost of $3.3 million. The new bridge is scheduled to be open to traffic by mid-November, in time for Thanksgiving.
