A Mount Joy man, Giovanni Shirk, 24, is charged in connection with the heroin overdose death of Tyler Horvat, 23 of Hummelstown. On November 1, Harrisburg Police responded to the 1400 block of 2nd Street for a report of an unconscious male, later identified as Horvat. Police also found evidece of recent heroin use.

It is alleged that Sherk sold the heroin that resulted in Horvat’s death to a group of people including Horvath the night before. Harrisburg Police Criminal Investigation Division officers also say that the delivery took place at a bowling alley in Rheems, Lancaster County and that Horvat then took some of the heroin to an apartment in Harrisburg.

Dauphin County Senior Deputy District Attorney Stephen R. Zawisky will be prosecuting the case. Zawisky stated: “Heroin plays a huge role in the criminal justice system. It causes death, motivates thefts, robberies and burglaries, destroys lives, and tears apart families. A decision to use heroin is a decision to end your life.”

Charges against Shirk include, one count each of Drug Delivery Resulting in Death and Unlawful Delivery of a Controlled Substance as well as other related charges.
