Middlesex Township Police received a complaint of an individual with a heavy Eastern Indian accent calling and stating he is a Microsoft Certified Engineer and that he can see the person he is calling has computer troubles. He offers to fix it for you. This is a common scam. They will ask you to turn on your computer and navigate to a website to download remote command & control software. In other words, they get your permission to take complete control of your computer under the guise they will “fix” the “problem”.
First, once you have installed the script from the website they can control your computer and install any malware they want. This would include keyloggers to watch you type in any passwords to email, websites, and banking sites. Keyloggers allow them to capture every single keystroke that you make. Furthermore, they can also pretend to remedy the “problem” you had with your computer and charge you for it. Not only will they get your money but take your credit card info for future use.
Remember, the number that comes up on your caller ID is not the actual number they are dialing from, it is a spoofed number. Many of these phone scams come from foreign countries and use spoofed numbers. Banks, businesses and other institutions will not cold call you looking for information from you.
Do not fall for phone scams. “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is”.
