A lot of teens are gearing up for their graduation as the school year winds down. But, at one Florida high school, excitement for that day is being overshadowed by a new policy that has people outraged.
The new policy at Manatee High School means parents will be charged to see their children graduate. If they want a good view, it’s gonna cost them a 200 dollar “premium” seating charge. On top of that, every student is also required to pay a twenty dollar fee to participate in the event.
“200 dollars is a lot of money for a preferred seating, you know? Is my child more important than yours? What’s the real deal,” says Mayu Fielding who’s child attends Manatee High. Another parent, Jennifer Brantley wants a review of the school’s finances and adds, “I think that’s ridiculous. It should be free. I mean, it’s sad if you wouldn’t be able to bring all your family members with you.”
The district points out other high schools in Manatee County are already charging graduation fees, adding that the school will waive the twenty-dollar charge for students with financial needs. But–that 200 dollar preferred seating price will still stand.
