Officials at Princeton Baptist Medical Center told AL.com the claims were without merit.

According to the lawsuit, Johnny Lee Banks Jr. underwent the surgery last month. He was expecting a circumcision, but claims his penis was gone when he awoke from the anesthesia.

Banks says he has suffered extended pain while recovering and in turn has spent more money on hospital bills. The man’s wife also claims loss of consortium.

Banks and his wife, Zelda, are seeking an unspecified amount in damages.

The lawsuit accuses the hospital of medical malpractice, negligence and other wrongdoing, according to AL.com.

“We intend to defend all counts aggressively,” said a statement from Baptist Health System Inc., which operates the hospital in Birmingham.

The hospital declined further comment.
