State Police say a  West Virginia woman died from her injuries  during a traffic accident in Franklin County on Monday night.

According to police, the  accident occurred just after 6 p.m. when the Toyota Matrix driven by Shane Allen Barnhart, 24, of Chambersburg and a  Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Michael Eugene Payne, 57, Hedgesville, West Virginia collided along the 3500 block of the Molly Pitcher Highway in Guilford Township.

Barnhart’s vehicle caught fire as a result of the accident. Both Payne and his passenger Karen Elaine Payne, 45, also of Hedgesville, were flown to Meritus Hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Karen Payne was later pronounced dead at the hospital, while Michael Payne is at the hospital with “major injuries,” police said.

Police say Barnhart was also taken to Meritus with “major injuries.”

State police did not say what the initial cause of the accident was.
