A local soldier returns home from Afghanistan and meets some special folks in Adams County who have supported him during his deployment.

Students at the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary School in McSherrystown welcomed Sergeant Ty "Doc" Beccio back from overseas. Students, faculty, and their families "adopted" Sergeant Beccio this school year-- sending care packages and gifts to him during his service in Afghanistan.

The welcome home celebration is extra special because Beccio is also a former BVM student.

"It's just like a family here," Beccio said,  "It's a positive environment. They kept in touch; each of them made cards for the holidays not just for me but for my whole team. They sent us over a Christmas tree we all decorated. They are very much a part of our deployment of trying to make it feel more like home. "

Sergeant Beccio presented the school with a flag that he carried on his mission.

Students and faculty also chose to support Beccio's charity of choice-- Fisher House Foundation. Faculty and staff contributed a donation to Fisher House to wear blue jeans on Fridays, and this year’s Veteran’s Day flag sales were also donated to this charity which supports military and veterans' families. So far they've raised more than 700 dollars for the cause.
