Between the snow and freezing temperatures, winter weather can really take a toll on our roadways.

One of the biggest issues for drivers right now is potholes.

Officials with PennDOT say the arctic blast has created prime conditions for them to develop across the state, including here in Central PA.

Mike Summerville, the assistant highway maintenance manager for York County PennDOT, says all it takes is for a little bit of water, or melting snow, to seep into a small crack in the road.

Once it freezes and expands, it can cause the pavement to break which then causes potholes to form.

PennDOT crews are now asking drivers to be their extra set of eyes out on the roadways and report any potholes they may see in hopes of getting them fixed as soon as possible.

That number to call is 1-800-FIX ROAD.

PennDOT crews say they'll be able to temporarily fix the issue using a special cold weather mix, however, they have to wait until it gets warmer outside in order to fix the potholes for good.
