Severe Weather Awareness Week continues with Thursday’s topic: River Flooding.

Pennsylvania has an extensive river system that is scenic and beautiful. Many towns and cities line the landscapes of the many rivers and large creeks. While enjoyable to view, when river or creek levels rise, many are affected. The rising water can be destructive and deadly too.

There have been widespread river floods every year in Pennsylvania.

CAUSES O F RIVER FLOODING:
-Prolonged periods of heavy rainfall
-Slow moving thunderstorms
-Tropical systems (the biggest cause of flooding)
-Extensive snow melt

What does a Flood Watch mean?
It means there is the potential for flooding to occur. It can and is usually issued 24 hours before actual flooding is expected to start. They are issued for many counties. This gives you more time to prepare.

What should you do when a Flood Watch is issued?
-Listen to NOAA Weather Radio or other media outlets for updates and possible warnings
-Get ready to move your personal property out of areas prone to flood
-Have a safe evacuation plan whether at work or at home
-Make sure everyone knows where to go if flooding occurs
-Move to higher ground
-Keep a battery powered radio and several working flashlights

What does a Flood Warning mean?
It means river levels have exceeded flood stage along the larger bodies of water. River floods take longer to develop than flash flooding so there isn’t as great a threat to life but river flooding can still be very destructive to property.

What should you do when a Flood Warning is issued?
-Gather necessary items: medicine, clothing
-Move valuables to higher ground or upper level of your home
-Obey evacuation orders from Emergency Management or Local Law Enforcement Officials
-Avoid roads covered with water
