COLUMBIA, Pa. – A 100-year-old building in Lancaster County forced the shutdown of a street in Columbia Borough. The 200 block of Locust Street has been shut down since last Thursday because they fear a condemned building on the street could collapse. Engineers surveyed the extent of the damage today to determine if the building could be saved.
For borough officials, saving the building is one of their top priorities. “People come to this town just to look at the architectural details on many of the buildings we still have remaining. To lose one of those, sets in motion something that the historic architectural review board and the city do not want to see happen,” said Columbia Borough Zoning and Planning Officer Jeff Helm.
A bulging wall in the back of the house forced the building to be condemned more than two years ago. The 200 block of Locust Street will remain closed until the front of the home can be made structurally sound.
