Gastonia, NC — It all started with photos posted on Facebook showing hair donations in a dumpster.

The pictures were taken Tuesday morning behind a Great Clips in North Carolina.

A reporter for WBTV tracked down some of the people by the names on their donation sheets.

Nannette Mcdaniel donated her hair and was shocked by the news, “Why would they just throw it in the dumpster because I donated it out of the kindness of my heart.”

She said, “I personally know people with cancer and I know people who have battled and lost with cancer”

Mary Helton has donated five times, but says she won’t do it again, “I could not believe it. They’re throwing stuff away that these little kids can use.”

A store manager confirmed that a box of 100 donations was thrown out accidentally, and the employee involved has been reprimanded.

The manager said they were able to salvage all but five of the donations, because they were in individual bags.

Mcdaniel is still upset over what happened saying, “That’s five people that won’t be able to have wigs now.” Helton said,  “They ought to be ashamed of theirselves.”

Great clips’ manager says they take pride in offering free haircuts to anyone who wants to donate to Wigs for Kids.

The executive director of Wigs for Kid has said Great Clips plans to donate $1,000 to Wigs for Kids in the names of each of the people whose donations were lost.
