RUSSELLVILLE, AL — An Alabama mother was shocked when she found photos of her daughter misused on social media.
Ashton Hamner discovered the pictures of her 16-month-old daughter Lennox turned into offensive memes.
“They were making fun of her for being bald and saying she had cancer and that I should kill her and that she was retarded and really hateful things,”
Hamner told WAFF. “I cried. That’s all I could do. I was very upset about it I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”
Not only were the photos offensive, but they’re also illegal.
“They can repost it,” Legal analyst Mark McDaniel told WAFF. “But if they take my picture and put a heading under it then they are altering the situation there. Then you could get into situations depending on what the situation is you can get into situations of defamation of character.”
Hamner reported the pictures to Facebook, and they have been taken down.
She has changed all her privacy settings on Facebook, but she wanted to share her story so other parents don’t have to go through the same experience.
