YORK CITY, Pa.–Autopsy results have been released for the 12-year-old boy who died Sunday from what appeared to be an accidental shooting in York City.

Marlin Banks Jr., 12, died as the result of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the York County Coroner’s office. The shooting happened in the 200 block of North Richland Avenue in York around 7:40 a.m. Sunday.

Banks was rushed to York Hospital where he later died.

Investigators said Banks accidentally shot himself in his home while he was looking at a gun. It remains unclear how Banks got access to the gun.

Banks was a seventh grade student at Ferguson K-8. York City School District is providing counseling services to students and staff.

The school district issued a statement after hearing the news of Banks passing: “We are devastated by the loss of a student who brought smiles to the faces of his classmates and his teachers everyday.”

The shooting is under investigation by the York City Police Department.
