UPDATE: The victim was identified as Evelyn B. Miller, 70, of York.

YORK, Pa. -- A woman in her 70s who was struck by a school bus in York City has died.  The accident happened around 7:41 a.m. at the intersection of South Beaver and West Princess Streets. The woman was taken to York Hospital, where she later died from her injuries, police said.

At this time the victim's name is not being released. The driver and four Eastern York students, who were on their way to  St. Patrick and Logos Academy,  were unharmed.

The accident reconstruction team is investigating the incident.

Full Statement from Bus Company:

"The Red Lion Bus Company family wants to extend its deepest sympathies to the family of the woman who was killed in this accident. Safety is our extreme priority, and our drivers have extensive training to ensure they are as safe as possible on the road and with their passengers. The driver involved in this incident has a very clean driving record. She is cooperating fully with police and we will certainly be reviewing and assessing the incident, as well. We have also provided her with counseling, as she is obviously upset about this incident. School counselors have been made available for the four students who were on the bus at the time. Red Lion Bus has a 76 year history of excellent, safe driving in central Pennsylvania. Each school day we transport approximately 8,500 students over 15,000 miles to our school districts customers. We will continue to work to ensure that our buses and drivers follow the very highest of safety standards."

Full statement from Logos Academy :

"Students from Logos Academy come from twelve different school districts in York County. Students from these districts are transported to Logos by transportation provided by the various school districts. This morning, two Logos Academy students being transported from the Eastern York School District were involved in an accident that involved a pedestrian death in York City. The students were not injured in the accident and arrived to school safely. They were immediately offered counseling and family support.

The Logos Academy community extends its deepest condolences and prayers to the family impacted by this tragic event."

Full statement from the Eastern York School District :

"In Eastern York School District, emphasis is placed on safety in every area of school. That includes maintaining accurate information to you which may involve issues of safety. We want to inform you of two isolated incidents that occurred this morning before school.

At approximately 7:50 AM this morning, Red Lion Bus 27 transporting four non-public school students was involved in a an accident involving a pedestrian.  This accident occurred on the corner of Princess and Beaver Street in York City.

None of the four students appeared to be injured in any way. Parents were notified and students arrived to school safely.

The driver of the school bus was not injured.  Local law enforcement is investigating the cause of this accident and proper system protocol will be followed.

A second situation occurred at approximately 8:25 AM this morning when Red Lion Bus 50 was transporting elementary students to Canadochly Elementary School.  The bus driver smelled smoke and pulled off the road into a safe place to conduct an evacuation per protocol. Students were moved to another bus and were transported to school without incident.  There were no injuries to the students or the bus driver. The local fire department is on the scene. All parents/guardians of students involved were contacted by their building principal.

Red Lion transportation department has a very safe driving record, and these were two isolated incidents. Regardless, we want you to be aware of each of these incidents as we partner with you for the safety of your child. Thank you for entrusting your child to our care.
