YORK, Pa. - Auditor General Eugene DePasquale today announced the start of an audit of the York City School District.

"We're going to be looking at the significant financial challenges of the district that are not dissimilar to other urban districts across Pennsylvania," he said. "We'll certainly take an independent look at the safety of the kids in the district."

The audit will cover July 2010 through June 2015.

Audit areas may include, but are not limited to, assessments of financial stability, academic achievement, school safety, teacher and administrator certification, governance, contract management and monitoring, bus driver certification, and student data collection and reporting.

DePasquale says the school district is more willing to cooperate now than it was during the previous audit cycle.

"We fully expect that we're going to have some recommendations are going to help us do a better job of being stewards of taxpayer dollars and making sure that the kids of York City are getting the very best education possible," York City school district spokesperson Erin James said.

The audit also will assess how the district responded to recommendations made in a previous audit released in March 2012.  That audit noted professional staff certification deficiencies, inadequate documentation of student data, and an early buyout of a former superintendent’s contract that cost the district $326,354.
