Uber driver says taxis have an unfair advantage at HIA

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. -- Anyone needing a ride to or from Harrisburg International Airport can ask a friend, call a taxi or tap on an app for an Uber.

The airport recently reached a deal with the ride sharing service to allow Uber drivers to pick up or drop off customers at the terminal.

One driver believes he's the one being taken for a ride.

Peter Goulet believes a new deal gives taxi fares an unfair advantage over Uber drivers waiting for travelers.

"So after fuel costs, I was bringing home about $500. Right now, like last week, $325," Goulet said.

Uber's agreement went into effect with Harrisburg International Airport to pick up passengers on July 7th.

Harrisburg International Airport deputy director of marketing Scott Miller said "they can pick up on the third floor, and as they exit the garage, with a ride, and they're there less than 30 minutes, it doesn't cost them a dime."

"Four, two, there you go, $8.80 is what I paid for 161 minutes," Goulet said.

For customers it's a matter of choice. Anyone wanting to take a taxi from the terminal can catch one downstairs on the first floor, or to take an Uber head upstairs to the third floor to a designated ride sharing area.

"I paid to take the customer home that day. That's not good, paying to take the customer home, and so that's what I'm griping about," Goulet said.

"Uber sets up the geo-fencing for where they can pick up a ride hail, they're in control of that, we just needed a location in the garage that's accessible for everybody," Miller said.

"What happened was I had to sit there and gamble and say, 'jeez, when are the flights coming in, do I leave now and cut my losses, or do ' stay here and try to pick up a fare,'" Goulet said.

It may be a gamble for some, but other Uber drivers say paying for parking is a small price to pay for the chance to make money at the airport.

"A week in we think it's going very well, but we're always looking for ways to improve everything. With feedback and continued dialog with Uber, I'm sure we'll figure out a system that works, that pleases everybody," Miller said."
