Lancaster Shooting Wednesday night

LANCASTER, PA- Police are investigating after police officers were shot at Wednesday evening and a 13-year-old was shot in the leg.

It happened just after 10:00 p.m. along the 500 block of Manor Street in Lancaster City.

Officers saw three suspects running from Manor Street and one of them was carrying a handgun.

Officers lost sight of the third suspect, carrying the gun.

While officers were trying to locate the suspects, they heard gunshots being fired and felt bullets go over their heads. The officers immediately ducked for cover.

“It’s a scary part. It’s a reality of police work and I think the public needs to constantly be reminded that when our officers hear gunshots they are running towards them and it’s frightening, but we are not afraid. If somebody is shooting at someone or shooting at us we are going to continue to pursue them and go after them,” said Lt. Todd Umstead, Lancaster City Police.

The officers could not determine who fired the shots. Multiple cars were also hit.

As officers continued to look for the suspects, the third suspect, a 17-year-old Lancaster male, with the handgun, stepped out of hiding and into their view.  Officers ordered the suspect to the ground and he was taken into custody without incident.

While on scene,  officers responded to the area of Filbert Street and Campbell Avenue for a gun shot victim.

Officers found a 13-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was transported to a local hospital where his injuries are non-life threatening. He is doing well and being released from the hospital.

During the investigation, police learned that the 13-year-old was walking along Filbert Street with a family member when they heard gunshots. Police believe that the 13-year-old and his family member were most likely the two other subjects police initially saw running when they arrived. The 13-year-old and his family member do not appear to be involved with the shooting, police said.

Police processed the scene, no additional suspects were located, but numerous bullet casings were found at the scene. A Bersa .380 caliber handgun was found behind a vehicle near 19 W. Filbert Street, the same area where the 17-year-old suspect disappeared from officers view.

The gun has been reported stolen from North Carolina, police said.

The 17-year-old is now charged with one count each of Receiving Stolen Property, Possession of Firearm by Minor, Loitering and Prowling At Night. The juvenile is being detained at the Lancaster County Youth and Intervention Center.

No officers were injured during the shooting

The investigation is continuing and anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call Lancaster City Police at (717) 735-3300 or Lancaster City-County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-322-1913.
